Health visitors play an essential role in promoting the appropriate use of vitamins and minerals (like folic acid) in pregnant women, babies and young children. Vitamins and minerals keep the body functioning correctly – most people can avoid deficiencies through a varied, balanced diet, but additional vitamin supplementation is recommended at certain times and for some high-risk groups to support healthy growth and development.

Many children in the UK have low levels of key vitamins, and health visitors are well placed to provide families with information on their importance, advise on supplementation, and signpost parents to trusted guidance and schemes that improve vitamin uptake in the community.
