The NIPE programme recommends the offer of screening to all babies born in England for conditions relating to the:

  • eyes
  • heart
  • hips
  • testes (if applicable)

The initial NIPE newborn screening examination should be completed before, or at, 72 hours of age. The NIPE newborn screening examination forms part of the wider systematic examination of the newborn and is usually undertaken at the same time. NIPE infant screening examination is also offered at 6 to 8 weeks of age, usually in primary care/GP practice.
